At some point in your life, you’ve probably heard someone say that dog’s mouths are cleaner than humans. You can attribute much of this talk to urban legends. There are some truths about dogs that form a basis for these myths though. The issue here is, “Would you rather kiss another human or a dog?”
Have you ever watched someone’s pooch lick them right on the lips and thought “ewww, dogs lick their own behinds, eat their own poop, use their noses to snouse through dirt and garbage, and bring home gruesome parts of creatures they have killed. Surely the dog’s saliva is filled with dangerous bacteria and diseases that could be passed to the humans he licks. You just can’t believe than it’s possible for dog’s mouths to be cleaner than ours. Humans clean our teeth on a daily basis and don’t eat all of the nasty stuff that dogs do, so how could they have a cleaner mouth?
The bacteria found in your dog’s mouth is specific to canines. When dog’s lick their owner’s mouths, the bacteria won’t be transferred. You won’t suffer any health consequences as a result of being licked by a dog. Nevertheless, if puppy slobber isn’t to your liking, you’ll probably still want to avoid close contact.
There’s a possibility that the myth about dog saliva being healthy started from the way that puppies lick their wounds. If you know how rough a dog’s tongue can be, you’ll understand how licking a wound will eliminate dead tissue and facilitate faster healing. People back then probably though that their saliva helped them get better faster.
So is a dog’s mouth cleaner than a human’s? No, it definitely isn’t, and a lick on the lips isn’t going to kill you. Oftentimes, kissing another human could cause more health problems than kissing a dog. Doc No.azlcssaeh-sdgfhkl
